In questo documentario di 4 ore e 15 minuti (un'esperienza visiva estrema) sono i fatti e gli uomini che parlano, attraverso un montaggio perfetto di interviste, frammenti televisivi, filmati amatoriali che non lasciano scampo. Lee mostra il dramma dell'evento in sé, che si affievolisce con i giorni, e mostra l'esponenziale crescendo di situazioni conseguenti, ancora più terribili dell'uragano. Gli aiuti arrivati in ritardo, le cause originarie della rotture delle dighe, i senzatetto, gli abitanti senza casa sradicati dalla loro terra e spediti in altre zone del paese. L'amministrazione Bush è pesantemente criticata con dati oggettivi difficilmente confutabili. When the leeves broke: a requiem in four acts è nuovamente un grandissimo Spike Lee, che abbandona la fiction e mette insieme (per un'opera così è un termine perfetto), un capolavoro del genere documentaristico. Niente è tralasciato, tutto è proiettato davanti i nostri occhi, in un susseguirsi di emozioni e sensazioni, che non strema per la lunghezza, ma rende attoniti. Perché l'uomo è capace di distruggere più della natura.
